Excellent Condition - Minor wear consistent with age and history. Frame and mat show wear but painting is excellent

Expressionist, still life, oil painting, c. 1950's. Signed J. Batchelor in paint lower left. Address label and title on reverse, "Fruits of the Earth". Period frame with linen mat measures 27" x 1 1/2" x 22 1/2", done on panel, sight measures 20" x 15". Acquired in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Jonathan Batchelor

Jonathan Batchelor was born on June 29, 1913 at sea aboard an American schooner off Vancouver Island. Batchelor moved to Oakland in 1921 and at age 13 enrolled at the CCAC. 

He continued in Los Angeles at the Lukits School, Wilshire Art School, and Otis Art Institute. During the 1930s he worked on the WPA art projects and as an illustrator for UC and the city of Oakland. He taught at CCAC from 1946-52 and then for many years in the Oakland Adult Art School. 

After settling in Canyon, CA in 1949, he remained there until his demise on Dec. 16, 2003. 

His work includes portraits, female nudes, landscapes, and still lifes in oil, acrylic, pastel, bronze, stone, and wood. Primarily a realist, he also produced abstract paintings.
