Original oil on board by artist Nico Vandenheuvel, c.1950's-60's. Cubist portrait is signed Nico in paint on lower right. Canvas board measures 13 3/4" x 17 3/4" with black wood frame measures, 16 1/2" x 20 1/2". Gallery label on reverse, Galerie Nico, Venice Beach, CA.

Nico Vandenheuvel

Nico Vandenheuvel has been a painter and a sculptor for over 60 years. Painting realistic, cubist, and abstract paintings from 1947 to the present.

A Dutch-born artist, Mr. Vandenheuvel studied advertising design and then attended the Rotterdam Academy of Art. In the 1950s, he lived the bohemian life of a starving artist in Paris. In 1958, he and his wife Dory immigrated to the United States, specifically to Venice, California. They were instrumental in starting the artists’ colony there by opening the art gallery Galerie Nico and fully immersing themselves in Venice’s Beat Generation lifestyle. In the 1970s, the Vandenheuvel family lived in Topanga Canyon, where they continued their artistic endeavors. For the past fifteen years, Mr. Vandenheuvel has made the Central Coast his home. He has participated in dozens of exhibitions in the United States and internationally, including his one-person exhibition in SLOMA’s Gray Wing titled Nico’s Eye in 2001.
